Staying safer

Avoid substances all together is by far the safest way, but not everyone wants to make that choice. So how do you stay safe if you are going to use?

  • Plan a safe way home. Have a designated driver, bus, taxi, or sleep at a friend’s house.
  • Keep your drink with you at all times (this way, there is way less chance of someone slipping something into your drink). If you leave your drink out of site, throw it out and get a new one.
  • Use the buddy system. Check in with each other so that you are both okay, and don’t leave without each other.
  • Carry condoms in case sex happens. If you are planning on it, use a female condom and put it in before you leave the house, so that you know there is some kind of protection in place.
  • Buy drugs from people you know or a regular dealer so you know what you are getting.
  • Drink water before each drink.

If you are using injected drugs:

  • Rotate injection sites to avoid damaging veins
  • Use clean needles to avoid blood born diseases such as Hepatitis C and HIV, and don’t share equipment.
  • If you can’t get new needles, clean them with bleach or boil needles between uses. It isn’t guaranteed to kill the viruses, but it is better than nothing.
